Hatch Repair & Redesign

Back

The cockpit locker lids were remarkably flimsy with no hinges.  The lids were reinforced with two half round pieces which were epoxied and glassed in place.

Longer pieces would have been optimal, but I went with pieces I already had on hand.

Now when you step on the locker lid, you don't worry about falling through.

All lockers (and the underside of the lids) were painted with Bilgekote Gray.

The cabin hatch is also very skimpy.  The teak "handle" on top was broken in several places.  There was also a very large impact crack in the top of the hatch.  This hatch was clearly never designed to be stood on.

The leading and trailing edge were reinforced from the underside with fiberglass tape.  The circular cracks in the gel coat were sanded and filled prior to painting.

The replacement "handle" was made from a piece of toe rail that had been removed.  The existing holes were filled with teak plugs prior to counter boring new holes that corresponded to the existing holes in the hatch.
